How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost in the UK?
It's the first thing most owners ask us, and most answers online are either vague or out of date. Meta changed how WhatsApp is charged on 1 October 2026. Here's what a WhatsApp chatbot actually costs to build and run in the UK now, line by line, with worked examples.
The short answer
There are two costs, and you should always see them separately.
- The build is a one-off. A WhatsApp-only chatbot typically costs £900 to £3,000+, depending on what it does and what it connects to. A full lead-handling system that adds an AI voice agent and a CRM usually starts from around £3,000. Either way, it should be a fixed price agreed before work starts.
- Running costs are monthly and based on usage. For most small businesses they land somewhere between £20 and £100 a month, more if you add a voice agent. They should be paid by you, directly to each platform, at cost.
The rest of this post explains where those numbers come from, so you can check any quote you're given.
What drives the build cost
Two chatbots can both be called "a WhatsApp chatbot" and differ in price by a factor of ten. The things that move the number are:
- How many jobs it does. Answering FAQs is one flow. Taking bookings, sending confirmations, chasing quotes and handing over to staff are each extra work.
- Rules or AI. A button-menu bot that follows fixed paths is cheaper to build. An AI assistant that understands free-text messages takes more design and testing, but customers actually use it.
- What it connects to. Every system it reads from or writes to (a calendar, a CRM, Xero, your booking software) adds integration work. This is usually the biggest variable.
- Whether calls are involved. Adding an AI voice agent to answer the phone is a separate component with its own design, testing and compliance work.
- The handover to humans. A good bot knows when to stop. Building clean escalation, with context passed to the right person, is part of the job, not an extra.
- Meta setup. Business verification, number registration and message template approval. It's admin more than build, but it has to be done properly.

Running costs, line by line
These are the figures as of October 2026. Platform prices change, so check the current rate before you budget.
1. Meta's WhatsApp message fees
Meta has charged per message, rather than per conversation, since 1 July 2025. If a quote or article still talks about "per conversation" pricing, it's out of date.
The bigger change came on 1 October 2026. Until then, replies sent inside the 24-hour customer service window were free. Meta now charges for those service messages per delivered message, at the same rate as utility messages. Utility templates sent inside the window are now charged too.
| Messages customers send you | Free |
|---|---|
| Service replies (inside 24 hours) | Approx. 1.6p each |
| Utility templates (confirmations, updates) | Approx. 1.6p each |
| Marketing templates (offers, promotions) | Approx. 4.6p each |
| Within 72 hours of a click-to-WhatsApp ad | Free |
The UK figures above are approximate sterling equivalents of Meta's rate card, as published by third-party providers in September 2026. Meta can update its rates quarterly, so treat them as a guide.
The practical effect: a chatbot that sends five replies per conversation now costs around 8p per conversation in message fees. Still small, but no longer zero, and worth designing for. A bot that rambles costs more than one that gets to the point.
2. Getting onto the platform
You can connect to WhatsApp's Cloud API directly, or through a Business Solution Provider (BSP).
- Direct to Meta: no monthly platform fee. You pay Meta's message fees only. Fine for simpler and internal builds.
- Through a BSP such as 360dialog: plans start at €49 a month per number, roughly £43, and Meta's message fees pass through with no markup. You get a provider that handles onboarding and support when something goes wrong with Meta, which it occasionally does.
Be wary of chatbot platforms that bundle everything into one subscription. Some add a markup to every message, charge per seat or per contact, or hold your number on their account. That last one is the expensive one: if you leave, getting your number back can be painful.
3. The automation platform
The chatbot needs something to run the logic and connect it to your other systems. We build on Make.com, where the Core plan costs around $9 to $11 a month (roughly £7 to £9) for 10,000 credits. Busier systems may need more credits or a higher plan. For a fuller comparison, see Make.com vs Zapier for UK businesses.
We're a Make affiliate: if you sign up to Make through our links we may earn a commission. It doesn't change what you pay or what we recommend.
4. The AI model
If the bot understands free-text messages, each reply calls an AI model, charged by usage. For a small business this is usually a few pounds a month, rising towards £20 or so for busier systems or longer conversations. That's our estimate from the builds we run, not a fixed price.
5. A voice agent, if you add one
If you want calls answered as well as messages, the AI voice agent is charged per minute. Across the main platforms, all-in costs typically fall between 10p and 25p a minute, depending on the platform, the voice and the AI model behind it. Again, an estimate: check the platform's current pricing.
Two worked examples
These are illustrative. Your volumes will differ, but the method is the same.
Example 1: a simple enquiry and FAQ bot. 100 customer conversations a month, four replies each, connected directly to Meta.
| Service replies (400 × 1.6p) | £6 |
|---|---|
| Platform fee (direct to Meta) | £0 |
| Make.com Core | £8 |
| AI model usage | £3 |
| Monthly total | About £17 |
Example 2: a garage lead line. 300 WhatsApp conversations a month with five replies each, a confirmation template for each booking, through 360dialog, plus an AI voice agent handling 150 calls of around three minutes.
| Service replies (1,500 × 1.6p) | £24 |
|---|---|
| Booking confirmations (300 × 1.6p) | £5 |
| 360dialog (€49) | £43 |
| Make.com | £8 to £16 |
| AI model usage | £10 |
| WhatsApp subtotal | About £90 to £100 |
| Voice agent (450 minutes at 10p to 25p) | £45 to £113 |
| Monthly total with voice | About £135 to £210 |
Put that against the work it catches. If the lead line books two extra first jobs a week at £150 each, that's around £1,200 a month in new work for a running cost of £200 or less. We walk through that kind of setup in WhatsApp chatbot for garages.
The costs nobody puts in the quote
- Maintenance. Prices change, opening hours change, Meta changes its rules. A bot nobody looks after slowly gets worse. Ask who maintains it, and what that costs.
- Lock-in. Ask whose name the WhatsApp number, the Meta Business account and the automation account are in. The answer should be yours.
- Unscoped monthly fees. A flat retainer with no clear scope suits nobody for long. If you pay for ongoing support, it should say what's included and when it's reviewed.
- Hidden markups. Platform and message costs should be billed by the platforms, to you, at cost. If they're folded into one "all-in" monthly figure, you can't see what you're paying for.
Our approach is simple: a fixed build price, every account in your name, and running costs paid directly by you at cost. If you'd like us to run and improve the system afterwards, that's a separate, clearly scoped monthly service, not a condition of the build.
Common questions
Is the WhatsApp Business app free?
Yes, the app on your phone is free. But it's for chatting by hand. It can't run an AI assistant or connect to your other systems. A chatbot needs the WhatsApp Business Platform, which is where the fees above apply. Our WhatsApp Business API page covers the difference.
Did WhatsApp get more expensive on 1 October 2026?
For most chatbots, slightly. Replies inside the 24-hour window used to be free and are now charged per message. At roughly 1.6p a reply in the UK, it adds pence per conversation, not pounds, but it's worth checking any running cost estimate written before October.
Can I get a WhatsApp chatbot for a monthly fee with no build cost?
Yes, from off-the-shelf chatbot platforms. They're quick to start, but you usually pay more over time, the bot only does what the platform allows, and your number often sits on their account. For a simple FAQ bot that can be fine. For anything that runs part of your operation, a built system you own usually works out cheaper and does more.
How long does it take to build?
Usually two to six weeks to the first working system. Meta's business verification is normally the longest wait, so it should be started on day one.
